A real case study: how RandPicker replaced a spreadsheet with a fair, auditable, DGCA-aligned way to select employees for random testing — and what it took to build it.
An aviation client came to us with a problem that sounds simple but isn't: they needed to randomly pick employees for a test, and prove that the pick was actually random.
Not a raffle. Not a "pick a name out of a hat" kind of random. Under DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) requirements, aviation operators must periodically select safety-sensitive employees for psychoactive substance (drug and alcohol) testing using a method that is fair, unbiased, and defensible if an inspector ever asks "how did you choose this person?"
That's how RandPicker — our custom aviation software for random employee selection — came to be. Here's the story of the problem, and how we built the solution.
If you work outside aviation, this requirement might sound unusual. But in a safety-critical industry, it makes complete sense: pilots, crew and other safety-sensitive staff need to be tested for psychoactive substances on a recurring basis, and the selection has to be genuinely random — not influenced, even unintentionally, by who a manager likes, dislikes, or simply remembers to include.
That means an aviation operator needs to show two things at once:

Before RandPicker, our client was doing this the way many operators still do: in Excel. A formula would "randomize" a column, someone would eyeball the top few rows, and that was the selection.
It worked, technically. But it created real risk:
